FACT: Research tells us that it takes six weeks to learn how to breastfeed …

Yet studies indicate this is the very time the majority of Australian women abandon breastfeeding.

To me it’s really simple: Women need more help.

They need consistent, trustworthy support and uplifting encouragement if they are going to win at breastfeeding; and this is where I know I can help.

And it’s my belief all women have the ability to successfully breastfeed.

As a registered and endorsed midwife, operating out of Melbourne, Australia, and servicing women locally and globally, I’ve witnessed and worked with countless women who have succeeded in their desire to breastfeed.

Although breastfeeding is natural, that doesn’t mean it comes naturally.

Breastfeeding really is a learned art.

You see, the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommends exclusive breastfeeding (only breast milk) for the first six months of life, then complementary feeding (solids and breastfeeding) until baby is two years of age, or beyond.

In the 2010 Australian National Infant Feeding Survey (ANIFS) results indicated that 96% of mother’s initiate breastfeeding. However, thereafter, exclusive breastfeeding rates drop off. At three months of age, 39% of babies are being exclusively breastfed, and by five months of age, 15% are being breastfed.

Much like learning any form of artistry, it takes practice, patience and the right support.
